Articles
Articles show whether a noun is general or specific. The essentials:
- a/an — one of many, or first mention (I saw a cat).
- the — a specific one the listener knows (the cat next door).
- no article — plurals and uncountables in general (Cats are independent).
Choose a/an by sound: a before a consonant sound, an before a vowel sound (an hour, a university).

Which article?
- Is it a specific one the listener knows? → the (the moon, the film we saw).
- Is it one of many, or a first mention? → a/an (a problem, an idea).
- Talking in general with a plural or uncountable noun? → no article (Books are great; Water is life).

What are articles in English?
