A vs An
Choose a or an by the sound of the next word, not its spelling:
- a + consonant sound — a dog, a university, a one-way street.
- an + vowel sound — an egg, an hour, an honest answer.
Watch the tricky ones: 'u' can sound like 'you' (a university) and 'h' can be silent (an hour). Go by sound.
The rule: follow the sound
Use a before a consonant sound and an before a vowel sound — based on pronunciation, not spelling.

What is the rule for a and an?
