Zero Article
The zero article (no article) is used when a noun is general. Main cases:
- Plurals and uncountables in general — Cats are clean; Advice is useful.
- Names, most countries, cities, languages — Maria, Japan, Madrid, English.
- Fixed phrases — go to school, at work, by bus, have lunch.
Switch to 'the' when you mean a specific one: 'I love music' (general) vs 'the music at the party' (specific).
When to use no article
Use the zero article (nothing) when the noun is general.

Add the only when the noun becomes specific.
When to use it
1. Talking in general
- Books open your mind. Honesty matters.
2. Names and places
- Maria is learning Spanish in Madrid.
3. Fixed phrases
- I go to work by bus and get home late.
⚠️ Compare: I’m in bed (sleeping) vs I’m sitting on the bed (the object); go to school (as a student) vs go to the school (the building).
Common mistakes
1. Adding ‘the’ to general plurals. The children need play (children in general) → Children need to play.
2. Adding ‘the’ to uncountables in general. The money can’t buy happiness → Money can’t buy happiness.
3. Adding articles to fixed phrases. go to the bed → go to bed. Pro tip: if you mean people/things in general, use no article; switch to ‘the’ only when you mean a specific one.

Frequently asked questions
What is the zero article?
It means using no article. English drops the article with general plurals and uncountables (Books are useful; Time is money) and with many names and fixed phrases.
Why is it 'I go to bed' with no 'the'?
Some places used for their normal purpose take no article: go to bed, go to school, be in hospital, at work. Add 'the' only for the building itself: I went to the school to meet the teacher.
Do meals take an article?
Usually no: have breakfast, after lunch, before dinner. Add 'a/the' only when described: a big lunch, the dinner we had.
When does a general noun take 'the'?
When it becomes specific: 'Life is hard' (general) vs 'the life of a nurse' (specific).
