Common mistakes

1. Adding ‘the’ to general plurals. The children need play (children in general) → Children need to play.

3. Adding articles to fixed phrases. go to the bedgo to bed. Pro tip: if you mean people/things in general, use no article; switch to ‘the’ only when you mean a specific one.

What is the zero article?

It means using no article. English drops the article with general plurals and uncountables (Books are useful; Time is money) and with many names and fixed phrases.

Why is it 'I go to bed' with no 'the'?

Some places used for their normal purpose take no article: go to bed, go to school, be in hospital, at work. Add 'the' only for the building itself: I went to the school to meet the teacher.

Do meals take an article?

Usually no: have breakfast, after lunch, before dinner. Add 'a/the' only when described: a big lunch, the dinner we had.

When does a general noun take 'the'?

When it becomes specific: 'Life is hard' (general) vs 'the life of a nurse' (specific).
