The: the definite article
Use 'the' when the listener knows exactly which one. Common cases:
- Unique things — the sun, the moon, the government.
- Already known or mentioned — the book (I told you about).
- Superlatives and defining phrases — the best, the man who called.
Also with rivers, seas, mountain ranges (the Nile, the Alps) and plural-country names (the USA, the Netherlands).
When to use ‘the’
Use the when the listener knows which one you mean.

When to use it
1. There’s only one
- The earth goes round the sun.
2. Second mention or shared knowledge
- We rented a cottage. The cottage was by a lake.
3. Made specific by a phrase or superlative
- She’s the tallest in the class. It’s the book that everyone loves.
⚠️ Some place names take ‘the’ (the USA, the UK, the Netherlands) but most don’t (France, Spain, Japan).
Common mistakes
1. Using ‘the’ for things in general. The dogs are loyal (meaning dogs in general) → Dogs are loyal.
2. Dropping ‘the’ with unique things. Sun is a star → The sun is a star.
3. Wrong article with superlatives. She is best → She is the best. Pro tip: if you (and the listener) both know exactly which one, use ‘the’.

When do I use 'the'?
When the noun is specific and the listener knows which one — because it's unique, already mentioned, or defined by the context: the sun, the car I bought, the manager.
Why is it 'the best' and 'the first'?
Superlatives and ordinals point to one specific thing, so they take 'the': the tallest building, the first time.
Do countries take 'the'?
Most don't (France, Japan), but plural or 'united' names do: the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, the Philippines.
Geography with 'the'?
Use 'the' with rivers, seas, oceans and mountain ranges (the Thames, the Pacific, the Andes) but not single mountains or lakes (Mount Everest, Lake Como).
