The with Names & Places
The rule for 'the' with places depends on the type of name:
- No 'the' — countries, cities, single lakes/mountains, streets (Spain, Rome, Lake Garda, Mount Fuji).
- the — plural or 'united' names, rivers, seas, ranges (the USA, the Thames, the Alps).
- the — names based on a common noun (the White House, the University of Leeds).
Test: 'the University of X' takes 'the'; 'X University' takes none (Oxford University vs the University of Oxford).

When to use it
1. No article — most single names
- She’s from Portugal and lives on King Street near Lake Windermere.
2. the — plural/united names and water
- The Netherlands is next to the North Sea; the Rhine flows through it.
3. the — institutions and landmarks with a common noun
- We visited the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, then the University of Paris.
⚠️ Compare: Oxford University (no article) vs the University of Oxford (with ‘the’); Buckingham Palace (no article) vs the Tower of London (with ‘the’).
Common mistakes
1. ‘the’ with an ordinary country. the France → France.
2. No ‘the’ with a river or range. We sailed down Nile → We sailed down the Nile.
3. Wrong pattern for institutions. University of the Oxford → the University of Oxford. Pro tip: single names usually take no article; plural/united names, water, and ‘the … of …’ names take ‘the’.

Frequently asked questions
Which countries take 'the'?
Plural or 'united/republic' names: the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, the Philippines, the Czech Republic. Most others take none (France, Japan).
Geography with or without 'the'?
Rivers, seas, oceans and mountain ranges take 'the' (the Amazon, the Mediterranean, the Andes). Single lakes and mountains don't (Lake Como, Mount Everest).
Do buildings and institutions take 'the'?
Usually yes when the name contains a common noun: the British Museum, the Ritz, the Eiffel Tower. Named after a person or place, often not: Buckingham Palace, Heathrow Airport.
Oxford University or the University of Oxford?
Both are correct. 'X University' takes no article; 'the University of X' takes 'the'.
