For, During & While
These three all talk about time, but they take different things after them:
- for + a length — for three days, for ten minutes (how long).
- during + a noun — during the meeting, during winter (when).
- while + a clause — while she slept (two actions at once).
Key test: 'during' is followed by a noun; 'while' is followed by a subject + verb. 'For' answers 'how long?'.
for, during, while
| Word | Followed by | Answers | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| for | a length of time | how long? | for two hours, for a week |
| during | a noun (event/period) | when? | during the meeting, during summer |
| while | a subject + verb (clause) | when? (two actions) | while I was cooking |
When to use each
1. for — how long
- We waited for twenty minutes. She’s lived here for ten years.
2. during — inside a period (+ noun)
- My phone rang during the film. It often rains during the night.
3. while — two things at once (+ clause)
- While I was reading, the baby fell asleep.
⚠️ ‘During’ takes a noun, not a length:
during three hours→ for three hours; during the trip is fine.
Common mistakes
1. ‘during’ + a length of time. I slept during eight hours → I slept for eight hours.
2. ‘while’ + a noun. while the meeting → during the meeting (or while the meeting was on).
3. ‘for’ for ‘when’. It happened for the night → It happened during the night. Pro tip: for = how long, during + noun, while + clause.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between for and during?
'For' + a length of time says how long (for two hours). 'During' + a noun says when, inside a period (during the concert).
During or while?
'During' is followed by a noun (during the film); 'while' is followed by a subject and verb (while I was watching the film).
Can I say 'during two hours'?
No. Use 'for' with a length of time: for two hours. 'During' needs an event or period noun (during the flight).
Is 'while' ever followed by -ing?
